Shyam Patel is the Associate Director for Portfolio Development and Review at CIRM. With $3 billion in funding and 165 active stem cell programs in its portfolio, CIRM is leading cell and gene therapy development for unmet medical needs. Shyam manages the funding approval process for CIRM’s flagship Clinical Trial Projects Funding Opportunity, which has a 2019 annual budget of $123M. Shyam also leads CIRM Business Development and manages the Industry Alliance Program, which is a collaborative effort between CIRM and select industry partners to support commercialization of CIRM’s portfolio projects. In 2018 alone, CIRM’s clinical stage projects raised $1B in corporate partnerships and venture investment funding. Prior to joining CIRM, Shyam was the CEO/CSO of NanoNerve, Inc., and part-time Bioengineering faculty at UC Berkeley. Shyam holds a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from UC Berkeley & UC San Francisco.
